Israel cannot stand by idly as Hamas launches rockets on its citizens.

I don’t mean to harp on the subject, but what rockets?

Hamas clearly ended its rocket attacks during this summer’s cease fire. This statement is based on based on data provided by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The few rockets that still managed to be launched were from Palestinian militants outside of Hamas’s jurisdiction, and Hamas made a clear effort to stop these actions, even arresting militants it found launching rockets.

Monthly Distribution of Mortar Hits

The relevant dates here are June 18th, 2008, when Hamas and Israel entered the cease fire, and November 4, 2008, when Israel broke the cease fire. Between those two points, when the cease-fire was in effect, Hamas was clearly playing by the rules. Israel by the way, was not, as it had not reduced the blockade by any meaningful margin, though this was a condition stipulated in the cease fire

I know that a lot of people in the United States government and media insist that Hamas was the one that broke the cease fire with its rocket attacks and that therefore, Israel should have defended itself by bombing and suffocating Gaza beyond imagination. If that version of history makes you feel better, fine, but it is simply not true.

You can’t ignore what Palestinians think about the events that happened to them this year, especially when they are right. By insisting that up is down and down is up, you give people the wrong incentives (why cooperate with Israel when the cease-fire resulted in a sucker punch, and you’ll get blamed for it anyways?). And by insisting on a twisted version of reality, while ignoring the truth known to the Palesinians and the Arab world, you only put more distance between the two sides.

The Israeli Government decided to take down these images from their website and replace them with something much more misleading. However, the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center was the original source of these graphs, where the Israeli Government got the data it published. Their website still contains that original data, contained in PDF Format. Here is a link to that PDF

I don’t buy that. You cannot dispute the rocket attacks. It has been happening and it’s Hamas’s responsibility to either stop doing it themselves, stop enabling or ignoring these militants, or prevent it from happening altogether. As enablers/perpetrators of the missile attacks, they need to be held accountable.
